The introduction of mammography in the 1960s and research in the field of oncology allowed for early detection and more effective treatment options, and at the end of this century, in the 1980s, it was detected that the prevalence of this disease was increasing in several countries around the world, so the fight against breast cancer began to be a concern at a global level and that is how awareness and the importance of early detection began to gain momentum.

In 1985, the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, proclaimed the first National Breast Cancer Awareness Week, which took place during the last week of October. This marked an important step in raising awareness about breast cancer in the United States. Over time, what began as a week of awareness turned into a global movement. The date was set, by initiative of the WHO, to October 19, thus recognizing globally the World Day of the Fight Against Breast Cancer.

The most iconic symbol of breast cancer, the pink ribbon, originated in the 1990s. It is said that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker in honor of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of this disease and focuses on the fight against breast cancer, was the first to use and display it.

Breast cancer is curable if detected and treated in time. Early detection is crucial for increasing the chances of survival. Mammography and breast self-examination are key tools for early detection.
