Reusable shopping bags are the new norm in society as more and more people are abandoning disposable plastic bags and turning instead to reusable bags. This is great news for the environment, and some studies have even shown that people that carry their own bags tend to shop for healthier foods when in the grocery store.
But one area that hasn’t gotten enough publicity, according to a national retailer of reusable shopping bags, is the maintenance of those bags. “There was some publicity about this last year when a reusable bag was identified as the culprit for a norovirus that sickened a soccer team, but since then, many people have forgotten about the importance of consistently washing the bags.”
And in addition to the notorious case of the soccer team’s illness, a study came out about the same time that showed 99 percent of reusable bags had some sort of bacteria in them, including coliform and E. coli. The study also highlighted the fact that only about 3 percent of reusable bag users ever wash them.
“That can be dangerous,” says the retailer. “People put raw food products in these bags and it’s important that that those foods are carried in a sanitary bag.”
Experts agree that users of reusable bags should wash them in hot water at least one a week. And most experts agree that the bags shouldn’t be kept in the car because the warm environment will allow bacteria to grow unfettered.
“If there is one message I’d like people to hear it’s this: Thank you for carrying the reusable shopping bags because it means you’re doing your part in helping keep the environment safe for generations to come. But as you go about it, be sure to protect your own health by remembering to wash them about once a week.”
