Why I winter-store my motorcycle at a local shop - Winter Storage the Right Way

Oct 19, 2022

When looking for motorcycle winter storage in Toronto, I did extensive research. I was fortunate enough to bump into an advertisement on Youtube from a local company - OTOMOTO, which has since been a game-changer. I drop off my bike when I'm ready, typically when the temperatures start to hit the lower digits.

I have been riding motorcycles in Toronto, Ontario, for over a decade. It has been so long that I cannot remember myself without a bike. Living in Toronto, Ontario, I can use my motorcycle from early April to mid/ end of October, depending on weather-related factors like rain or temperature. I have had several different bikes through the years; I now ride a late model BMW R Nine T with all the bells and whistles, including heated grips, which help me last longer into the colder season. It truly saddens me when the bike has to go into a col garage for the winter.

In the past, my motorcycle winter storage ritual was to do a quick oil change, plug a trickle charge, and throw a cover over the bike. Some years,  I wouldn’t even be able to get the battery plugged in as I was living in a downtown high-rise condo. In the spring, I would pray to the motorcycle Gods that my bike would be in working condition when a nice day finally rolled around.

One day during the winter of 2019, I went to check on the motorcycle; to my surprise, she was gone! The Toronto Police investigated and pulled up footage of a couple of dudes tossing my beloved bike into a van. Sadly, that was the last I ever saw of her. That instance helped me realize that I really needed to upgrade my winter storage habits.

I did extensive research and was fortunate enough to bump into an advertisement on Youtube from a local company – OTOMOTO, which has since been a game-changer. I drop off my bike when I’m ready, typically when the temperatures start to hit the lower digits.

They do an oil change throughout the winter storage period and cycle my battery. Their storage facility is alarmed and video-monitored. I now feel at ease knowing that my bike is as safe as can be through the winter months. Sometime in early to mid-January, I know I will receive an email highlighting the recommended maintenance required for the motorcycle to be in tip-top shape. A few weeks after approving the work, I receive confirmation of the completion. The motorcycle is always in excellent condition come spring, and all that’s left for me to do is ride. I will never winter-store my motorcycle any other way. I let the pros take care of it!
