Aboutrika criticizes Maresca over Bouaddi’s role at Manchester City
The Moroccan midfielder was taken off after 55 minutes as City suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Mohamed Aboutrika has challenged Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca’s decision to deploy Ayyoub Bouaddi in an advanced midfield role, arguing that the 19-year-old Morocco international belongs in a deeper position.
Speaking as a beIN Sports MENA pundit, the former Egypt forward said Bouaddi should operate as a number six rather than a number eight or 10. He argued that the midfielder’s ability to win possession, distribute passes and carry the ball forward was not being fully used.
Bouaddi’s fifth start across all competitions this season ended with his substitution after 55 minutes against Brighton and Hove Albion. City’s 1-0 defeat at home came in the Premier League’s ninth round. The midfielder, who has 10 Morocco caps, has contributed two assists in nine appearances for City.
Bouaddi joined City last summer, becoming the most expensive African player before Ivory Coast forward Yan Diomande’s move to Real Madrid surpassed that mark. His performances at the 2026 World Cup had drawn attention to his midfield qualities.
