Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson received a one-game suspension after spitting at an opponent in Buffalo’s victory over the Raiders, the NFL announced. He was also ejected from that game.

The suspension would keep him out when Buffalo hosts Baltimore in Week 8, following the Bills’ Week 7 bye. Gardner-Johnson may appeal the penalty. He is currently eligible to return in Week 9, when Buffalo visits the Vikings for Monday Night Football.

The NFL classified the incident as unsportsmanlike conduct under Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1. That provision covers acts that run counter to generally accepted principles of sportsmanship.

Bills head coach Joe Brady said after the game that the behavior was unacceptable and would be addressed, emphasizing that the team mattered more. Gardner-Johnson has recorded 26 total tackles, two passes defensed and one interception in his first season with Buffalo.
