Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley and Lions coach Dan Campbell said November 4 that Miami’s rebuilding effort resembles Detroit’s early development under Campbell, ahead of a matchup between their teams.

Hafley said he wants to follow Campbell’s approach and believes the Dolphins already display the physical play and commitment he associates with the Lions. While expressing disappointment with Miami’s 1-6 record, he said the young players’ effort and toughness suggest they are committed to one another.

Campbell offered a similar assessment of Hafley’s first season. He said Miami’s young roster reminded him of the team he inherited, pointing to the Dolphins’ energy, hitting, hustle and attempts to play with discipline. He credited Hafley with establishing the team in the right way.

Detroit finished 3-13-1 in Campbell’s debut season, improved to 9-8 in his second year and reached the NFC Championship Game in his third. Hafley said establishing a foundation with young players remains important despite Miami’s results.
