Washington has hired Steve Wilks for a role helping its coaching staff prepare game plans, NFL Network reported. The veteran coach is working with a staff led by Dan Quinn, the Commanders’ head coach, and Daronte Jones, their defensive coordinator.

According to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala, Wilks arrives on Sundays and leaves once Wednesday’s practice ends. Jhabvala reported that the arrangement had been under discussion before the season began, rather than being prompted by recent events. Wilks has already started the job.

His most recent position was defensive coordinator for the Jets, who fired him in December. Wilks has coached at both the professional and college levels.

In 2023, Wilks oversaw the 49ers’ defense during their run to the Super Bowl. The previous year, he took over as Carolina’s interim head coach following Matt Rhule’s firing and guided the Panthers to a 6-6 record. He also coached the Cardinals as head coach in 2018.
