The Brighton attacker's first goal of the campaign was the Premier League's longest-range strike since Wayne Rooney scored from 58 metres in November 2017.

Diego Gomez struck from 51 metres for Brighton & Hove Albion against Crystal Palace on October 18, beating goalkeeper Walter Benitez from inside the center circle during the Premier League derby at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton were already ahead through an own goal by Palace defender Jaydee Canvot after four minutes. Gomez then noticed Benitez away from his goal, took a touch and sent his shot over the goalkeeper to double Brighton's advantage.

No Premier League goal had been scored from farther out since November 2017, when Wayne Rooney netted a 58-metre effort against West Ham United while playing for Everton. For Gomez, 23, it was his first goal across all competitions that campaign, coming on his 10th appearance.

Yasin Ayari also scored in the 10th minute, taking Brighton's Premier League tally for the season to 21, two ahead of Manchester City. A Brighton victory would put them one point above Arsenal temporarily, with the title holders due to play Nottingham Forest at 4.30pm.
