San Francisco suffered its first defeat of the season against Atlanta, which won 29-20 behind three touchdown passes from Michael Penix and a defense that forced four turnovers.

Penix recorded 25 completions on 34 attempts, throwing for 213 yards. He avoided interceptions and fumbles and was not sacked. The Falcons quarterback had been sidelined by injury during the season’s opening two weeks.

Atlanta’s defense picked off Brock Purdy twice and took possession after fumbles from George Kittle and Kaelon Black. Purdy, working with a depleted group of receivers, threw multiple interceptions for the first time this season.

The result left the 49ers at 6-1. Atlanta improved to 3-4, remaining in contention in the NFC South.
