Gerrard backs Estevao as Chelsea face competition for attacking places
Estevao had six shots against Manchester United, while Xabi Alonso said the teenager had shown he deserved further opportunities.

Steven Gerrard singled out Estevao’s direct attacking style following Chelsea’s 2-0 victory against Manchester United, suggesting his performance would make selection harder for Xabi Alonso once Joao Pedro returns. The former Liverpool captain offered his assessment on The Overlap Daily.
The Stamford Bridge match was Estevao’s first Premier League start of the season. The 19-year-old produced six shots, with three on target, and created three chances before departing in the 87th minute. Offside decisions denied him two goals. Before that appearance, his league playing time amounted to 47 minutes across six games.
Gerrard praised the Brazilian’s appetite for shooting rather than extending attacking moves. He contrasted that approach with some Liverpool attackers, who he believes too often pursue an additional pass. With Joao Pedro recovering from a thigh injury, Gerrard also identified Pedro Neto as another player competing for an attacking role.
Alonso said he had informed Estevao beforehand that he would start and felt the forward’s response demonstrated his readiness and case for more opportunities. The Chelsea manager also commended his work rate and rapport with supporters. Estevao had previously made two EFL Cup starts totaling 125 minutes, but was an unused substitute when Liverpool knocked Chelsea out.
