J.J. McCarthy will start at quarterback for the Giants against Houston instead of Jameis Winston, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported. The decision follows McCarthy’s relief appearance against the Saints, when he helped New York narrow a 34-10 deficit to 34-27.

McCarthy took over from Winston during the fourth quarter and finished 11-of-21 for 243 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. He also moved the Giants inside the New Orleans 15-yard-line on their last possession, but a fourth-down pass fell incomplete to end the drive.

New York acquired McCarthy from the Vikings earlier in the season. A knee injury kept him out for his entire rookie season in Minnesota, and he made 10 starts in his second season while dealing with multiple injuries.

The Vikings brought in Kyler Murray during the offseason. McCarthy now has a chance for a longer stint as the Giants’ starter following Jaxson Dart’s torn ACL, with New York seeking to hold its position atop the NFC East.
