Harvey Elliott was dismissed 16 minutes into a substitute appearance for Valencia against Villarreal, who won through a 96th-minute goal from Georges Mikautadze. The defeat left Valencia 19th in La Liga, with one victory in 10 league matches.

The 23-year-old Liverpool loanee entered in the 70th minute with the teams level at 1-1. Villarreal subsequently lost Pape Gueye to a red card, but referee Alejandro Quintero Gonzalez then booked Elliott twice in quick succession for dissent, leaving both teams with 10 players.

Valencia manager Javier Aguirre criticized the dismissal and said he accepted responsibility because he chose the players. He said he would address the incident privately.

Spanish outlets also criticized Elliott's performance. Eldesmarque and Vavel each rated him 1/10, while Super Deporte awarded him zero out of 10. AS offered a less critical assessment of his movement and involvement but said he provided no attacking threat.

Elliott faces a La Liga ban of at least one match and will miss the November 1 visit to Elche. He can return against Real Madrid six days later unless the suspension is extended. He has yet to start for Valencia or register a goal or assist in six appearances.
