Jeffery Simmons sacked Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold on the Seahawks’ fourth offensive play in his Chicago debut, making an early contribution after the Bears acquired him from the Titans for two first-round draft picks.

Simmons said seeing a single blocker opposite him created an opportunity he expected to exploit. He said he holds himself accountable for winning those matchups and was pleased to record a sack in his first appearance for Chicago.

He also faced double teams and said he urged the other Bears defensive linemen to beat their individual blockers when that happened. Simmons said generating pressure without blitzing would ease the workload for teammates behind the defensive line.

His 55 defensive snaps represented 87 percent of Chicago’s defensive plays, matching his percentage with Tennessee this season before the trade. Simmons said the chance to play meaningful football mattered to him: Chicago is 6-2, while Tennessee is 1-7.
