Packers running back Josh Jacobs denied that putting his hands behind his back after a touchdown was meant to imitate being handcuffed. He said the gesture belonged to a celebration inspired by the gospel song “Break Every Chain.”

Jacobs said he and teammate Savion Williams had planned the celebration, but the game broadcast showed only a brief portion. He described it as the second part of a sequence: his previous touchdown celebration had been intended to thank God, with the song serving as the inspiration for the next one.

Observers had interpreted the gesture as a reference to handcuffs. Jacobs was playing his second game of the season following paid leave connected to a no contest plea involving a domestic violence accusation made by his girlfriend.

His paid leave has ended, but he could still face an unpaid suspension under the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
