Kubiak praises Mendoza’s extra work as Cousins keeps Raiders role
The No. 1 overall pick remains behind Kirk Cousins, but his coach and teammate say he is progressing and preparing for an opportunity.

Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak said No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza is exceeding expectations for his preparation while Kirk Cousins continues to keep the young quarterback out of the lineup. The Raiders have a 3-3 record.
Speaking at a press conference, Kubiak said he was pleased with Mendoza’s development, while cautioning that his readiness would remain uncertain until he plays. As an example of the quarterback’s additional work, Kubiak recalled finding him practicing alone on the field after others had left.
Cousins also praised Mendoza’s progress, saying he was learning, making plays and preparing for whenever an opportunity arrives. The veteran, who is in year 15, said both quarterbacks were continuing to refine their games.
Mendoza saw action during the Week 5 blowout defeat against New England and completed 6-of-8 passes for 48 yards. Cousins said he thought Mendoza performed well in that appearance and would be ready when called upon.
