Roma scored twice in the opening 17 minutes at Old Trafford on November 3, leaving Manchester United facing their earliest two-goal deficit in a major European home fixture. United were still trailing 2-0 when the Champions League match reached halftime.

Matias Soule opened the scoring after 11 minutes, moving into the penalty area from the right without being tracked and beating Senne Lammens. Six minutes later, Donyell Malen converted a penalty after Ayden Heaven was penalized for handling another Soule attempt.

United supporters had protested against the Glazers and INEOS before kickoff. During the match, some fans tossed tennis balls onto the field behind Roma’s goal, with Matheus Cunha removing them. Chants targeting Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers were also heard, followed by boos at halftime.

Michael Carrick’s side recorded 0.24 expected goals in the first half, compared with Roma’s 1.48. Soule also shot narrowly wide shortly before the interval. United entered the match seeking their first victory since beating Sabah 4-0 in their European opener.
