No. 1 Miami holds off Belichick’s North Carolina 38-35
Penalties nullified two late onside-kick recoveries by the Tar Heels, who had held a fourth-quarter lead.

Top-ranked Miami defeated Bill Belichick’s North Carolina 38-35, surviving a fourth-quarter challenge from the Tar Heels. UNC had led 28-24 before Miami scored two touchdowns, with a North Carolina turnover helping set up the second.
Those touchdowns gave Miami a 10-point advantage. North Carolina responded with a touchdown to bring the deficit back to three points, then tried to regain possession through an onside kick with less than two minutes remaining.
The Tar Heels recovered the ball on two attempts, but neither recovery stood. An offside penalty canceled the first, and an illegal block negated the second, ending UNC’s efforts to secure possession for another scoring opportunity.
North Carolina’s record stands at 4-4 after a 4-2 start. Belichick is 8-12 in his second college football season. The close loss to Miami followed a UNC victory over Pitt, which had been unbeaten before facing the Tar Heels.
