Rams coach Sean McVay offered a mixed assessment after activating separate specialists for scoring kicks and kickoffs, alongside a punter, against the Chargers on November 1. He praised parts of the kickoff coverage but criticized two penalties that gave the Chargers possession at the 40-yard line.

Brandon McManus was successful on all four attempts, converting a 30-yard field goal and three extra points. Joshua Karty handled only kickoffs and was penalized twice in five attempts for failing to reach the landing zone.

McVay said the decision to use two kickers followed struggles to contain returns. He said Karty's kicks were difficult to handle when they reached the landing zone, allowing the coverage unit to advance before the Chargers could organize a return.

The coach said previous success with Karty's squib kicks helped inform the choice. While McVay expected Karty to improve, he acknowledged that roster constraints could prevent the Rams from regularly activating two kickers.
