Philip Rivers has become the central candidate in NC State’s search for a head football coach, according to On3.com. The former Wolfpack quarterback is being considered for the vacancy left by Dave Doeren’s firing.

The search reportedly has no hiring timetable because Rivers remains a high school coach in Alabama. He began coaching at that level in 2021 and also interviewed for the Bills’ head-coaching opening. His son Gunner has committed to NC State’s class of 2027.

Rivers played at NC State from 2000 to 2003 before becoming the fourth selection in the 2004 NFL draft. The Giants drafted him, then traded him to the Chargers in the deal involving Eli Manning.

His Chargers career ran from 2004 through 2019. He joined the Colts for the 2020 season and then retired. Rivers later returned to Indianapolis for three starts after starting quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles tendon.
