Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has assured Estevao Willian that he will get further opportunities after leaving him unused in the Carabao Cup loss to Liverpool. Chelsea were beaten 6-5 on penalties at Anfield after normal time ended 1-1.

Alonso acknowledged that the Brazilian teenager could be unhappy with his playing time and said he was responsible for managing the situation. He cited the match's physical demands and fitness problems affecting other players as reasons for his substitution decisions.

Maxence Lacroix departed with a hamstring injury, while Moises Caicedo had physical problems and Malo Gusto suffered cramps. Alonso nevertheless brought on forward Emmanuel Emegha for Danny Welbeck; Emegha later missed his shootout penalty.

With Cole Palmer suspended and Joao Pedro injured, Alonso chose Pedro Neto, Morgan Rogers and Welbeck in attack. Estevao warmed up and supporters chanted his name, but he remained on the bench despite starting Chelsea's two earlier matches in the competition.

Estevao has made six Premier League appearances this season, all as a substitute, totaling 53 minutes. His only starts in 2026-27 have been in the Carabao Cup. Alonso said the winger was still adapting after injury and stressed the intensity of English football.

His international involvement has been greater: Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti used him in all three matches against Australia and India during the September-October break, including two starts. Estevao contributed a goal and an assist as Brazil beat India 4-0.
