Giants defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson criticized his players’ pursuit of the ball against the Saints as he prepared the defense to face the Texans. Next Gen Stats counted 18 missed tackles by the Giants in the Saints game.

Speaking at a press conference, Wilson said the performance did not reflect the defense’s usual standards. According to a team transcript, he addressed the effort by showing players the offending plays in meetings and challenging those who failed to pursue the ball.

Wilson said players must change that behavior or risk being replaced on the field. He expected a more energetic response against Houston, which has scored 90 points across the past three weeks. The Giants are trying to avoid a third consecutive week without a win.

On offense, J.J. McCarthy is preparing for his first Giants start against the Texans. He entered during the fourth quarter against the Saints and helped bring the team close to a comeback.
