Real Madrid are close to signing Manchester United attacking midfielder JJ Gabriel, according to Florian Plettenberg. A verbal agreement has been reached for the 16-year-old, whose move is scheduled for 1 January 2027.

Gabriel’s European passport allows the transfer to take place on that date. United are due training compensation of £306,000 (€360,000), rather than a transfer fee.

Marca reports that the England Under-17 international is expected to begin with Castilla, supervised by Jose Mourinho and his staff. Whether he progresses to Madrid’s senior team will depend on his performances.

Gabriel had indicated he wanted to leave United at the beginning of the new campaign. His reported concerns included limited pre-season involvement, missing out on the Champions League game against Sabah and the lack of a sufficiently direct route into the first team.

Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Barcelona had also been named as potential destinations before Madrid moved closer to an agreement.
