FIFA has suspended Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan for three matches over his criticism of a referee at the 2026 World Cup. The punishment followed Egypt's 2-3 defeat to Argentina in the round of 16.

Hassan blamed refereeing errors for the loss and said Egypt had been denied a quarterfinal place unfairly. Forward Mostafa Zico, who insulted the referee during an interview after the match, received a five-match suspension.

Ibrahim Hassan, the coach's brother and director of Egypt's national team, was also given a three-match ban. If upheld, the sanctions will rule both brothers out of November's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Malawi.

The Egyptian Football Association said it had requested an explanation from FIFA for the decision. It will determine whether to appeal after receiving that justification.
