J.J. McCarthy set for first Giants start against Texans
McCarthy won the job over Jameis Winston after throwing for 243 yards in the fourth quarter of New York’s Week 6 loss to the Saints.

The Giants, who are 3-2-1, have turned to J.J. McCarthy at quarterback for their matchup with the Texans. Acquired from the Vikings in a trade, McCarthy enters his first start for New York with a four-game winning streak.
His opportunity follows a fourth-quarter performance against the Saints in Week 6, when he passed for 243 yards in a Giants loss. That showing earned him the starting role ahead of Jameis Winston.
With McCarthy taking over, New York becomes the third team since the AFL-NFL merger to start three quarterbacks who were first-round draft selections. The others were the 2011 Raiders, with Carson Palmer, Jason Campbell and Kyle Boller, and the 1984 Bears, with Jim McMahon, Steve Fuller and Greg Landry.
The matchup pairs McCarthy, formerly of Michigan, with former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud. Stroud has won his past two games for Houston, which is trying to avoid its first 0-4 home start.
