The 49ers are consulting the NFL management council about Brandon Aiyuk’s situation after the receiver filed for reinstatement from their left squad list, General Manager John Lynch said on November 5. Aiyuk is expected at the club’s facility to continue the process of returning to football.

If reinstated, Aiyuk could be kept on the active roster, traded or released. Both Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have said his playing days with the 49ers are over. Shanahan reiterated that view before Lynch’s comments.

In an appearance on KNBR, Lynch said there was no established approach for handling the unusual circumstances. He described his duty as protecting the 49ers’ interests while trying to find a resolution that would work for both parties, and said the situation remained fluid.

Lynch did not rule out a return when asked, saying anything was possible. He also spoke favorably about working with Aiyuk’s new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, while leaving a fuller explanation of the process for later.
