The NFL fined 49ers linebacker Fred Warner $47,762 for hitting a defenseless player and $17,911 for initiating contact with his helmet during San Francisco’s Week 6 victory over the Commanders. Both penalties involved hits on Commanders tight end Chig Okonkwo.

Officials threw a flag on the defenseless-player play during the game, then withdrew it. Warner will face a one-game suspension if he is disciplined for two additional hits on defenseless players.

Warner has also received a fine for a hip-drop tackle. Three such violations carry the possibility of a suspension as well.

Meanwhile, 49ers safety Malik Mustapha received neither an on-field penalty nor a fine for his hit on Stefon Diggs in the same game. The ESPN broadcast had suggested the play warranted a penalty for hitting a defenseless player. With no fine imposed, Mustapha remains at one foul this season toward a possible suspension for repeated defenseless-player hits.
