Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has clarified that he wants to remain with the team, after earlier saying he would seek a payday elsewhere if Detroit did not give him a new contract.

Speaking to reporters, LaPorta said his intentions may have been misunderstood and expressed regret over any distraction his comments caused teammates or coaches. He said his teammates supported him and wanted him to be happy and compensated.

LaPorta has been dissatisfied with Detroit’s offers for a long-term extension. His rookie deal expires after its fourth season, with his base salary at US$5.675 million this year. He acknowledged his financial good fortune but said he believed his performance compared favorably with other NFL players and wanted similar pay.

Family stability also matters to LaPorta, who said he and his wife hope to stay in Detroit for years. They are expecting their first child, a girl, in the coming months. He also acknowledged the front office’s authority over contract decisions and said the organization had supported his career.
