The Chargers have opened a season with six consecutive losses for the first time since 2000, when their current head coach, Jim Harbaugh, played quarterback for the team. That squad finished 1-15, the worst record in franchise history.

Harbaugh took over as the starter in Week 5 of the 2000 season and passed for 348 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Rams, the defending Super Bowl champions. The Chargers lost 57-31. He remained the starter for four additional games before the team returned to Ryan Leaf with its record at 0-10.

Leaf, selected No. 2 overall in 1998, had started the first two games of 2000, throwing one touchdown and five interceptions. Moses Moreno replaced him in Week 3 but suffered a shoulder injury during that game.

Leaf returned to start Week 4 before being replaced by Harbaugh. After regaining the starting role later in the season, Leaf finished the schedule and earned the team’s only victory.
